GREEN ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Green Island Presbyterian Church was held on Tuesday in the Kirkland Hall, when the Rev. A. W. Armstrong presided over a large attendance of members. The annua] report, which covered a period of eight months, stated that, in spite of the difficult times, progress was maintained in all church activities. A successful mission, conducted by Mr and Mrs Andrew Johnston, was held in March and April and had been a source of spiritual uplift to many. As a result of the mission, a weekly prayer meeting was started at Fairfield, while Christian Endeavour Societies had been commenced at Green Island, Concord and Fairfield. The church had suffered a distinct loss through the death of Mr William Johnston, and expressions of deepest sympathy were extended to the bereaved family. Regular meetings of the session and Deacons’ Court had been held,_ and a spirit of goodwill and co-operation had prevailed. Thanks were due to Mr Wilkie for his capable work as secretary of the Deacons’ Court, and to Mr William Miller, the treasurer. Mr Christie had done excellent work in the past in connection with this important part of the church’s work. The P.W.M.U. had done noble work, and members were taking the responsibility of raising and collecting the mission" money. Three new members had been added to the ranks.

The Ladies’ Guild had a membership of 45 and mot regularly with the twofold object of fostering a friendly spirit among members and working for the financial side of the church. All were working hard in connection with the forthcoming sale of work. The work among the youth of the church was strong and vigorous, and all departments had been well maintained. The Sunday school at Green Island was fortunate in securing the services of Mr Bennett as superintendent, and since May, when he took charge, he had done good work. The staff totalled 15 teachers. Mr G. Morrison, superintendent of the Concord Sunday school, was assisted by two teachers, and Mr Albert Davey and Miss Davey at Fairfield were working excellently. The work of the four Bible classes of the parish was being capably handled by the various teachers. The Girls’ Life Brigade had experienced a successful year. The girls had been studying first aid under the tuition of Mr and Mrs Gough, and the branch at Concord, which had a membership of 20, had made a donation of £1 5s to the church funds. The Boys’ Brigade at Green Island under Mr Townrow, the Life Boys under Mr Frank Duncan, and the Boys’ Brigade at Concord, under Mr Cathro, still continued to do their work well, and the thanks of the church were due to the leaders for the time and energy they had put into the various branches. The choir had maintained a high standard of efficiency under the leadership of Miss George.' The special music rendered at Christmas was worthy of note, and at Easter the combined choirs of Green Island and Mornington had given an outstanding performance of “ Olivet to Calvary.” A very successful flower show had been held in March, and the proceeds,

which went to the church funds, had proved of great assistance. Thanks were extended to Messrs Nelson and Christie for their work as secretaries. The report concluded with ft special note of appreciation to the excellent service rendered by the minister (the Rev. A. W. Armstrong). As head of the session and Deacons’ Court, Mr Armstrong, by his unfailing tact and ability, had guided the spiritual, social and financial sides of his charge with the utmost care, and his work in the pulpit had been outstanding. In the care ot the sick and aged and in the visiting of their flock, Mr and Mrs Armstrong" had endeared themselves to the people in a very real manner. The report was adopted. During the evening a programme, arranged by Mr John T. Leech, was presented as follows; —Piano solo, Miss Dorothy Barron; recitation. Miss Walker; vocal solos, Miss Ruth Sell and Master Phillip Rylance; violin solo, Mr LeGal, piano duet, Misses • Dorothy Johnston and Dorothy Barron.
