MONTHLY MEETING ’The monthly meeting of the Society of Women Musicians of Otago was held on Monday evening in the Otago Women s Club room. Miss Emilie Logie gave an interesting talk on “ Composing with Beethoveu, the Lover of Nature. Mrs Campbell, the president, introduced the lecturer with a few words, and Miss Logie opened with a reminder that we are nearly always first , introduced to Beethoven, the writer of long and difhcult sonatas, and do not know so well his more genial Nature-loving side. We can all compose along with this Beethoven as we play and enjoy his music. The independence and sincerity of the master shows in his writings; He was always interested only in those who were sincere. He was kind and gentle to those he loved, a man of high ideals, lonely, though he had many friends. He often “poetised,” or, as it is called, “ composed ” far into the day in the country, so. completely did his soul satisfy itself with outdoor things. Miss Logie, who presented most gracefully every point, stated that we are all artists, poets, musicians when we have inspiration. A programme was given by members, the speaker saying a few apt words of explanation about each item before it was played. Later, Mrs Campbell, in complimenting Miss Logie on the poetical way she expressed herself, said that she wished we could all play our thoughts in such an attractive manner. Miss Mary Martin, in proposing a vote of thanks, admired the quiet thoughtfulness of the lecturer and thanked her for showing so many new points about Beethoven. Miss Martin also thanked the performers, who.one and all had played so artistically their illustrations. The following programme was presented to bring out. x>i.iss Logie’s points:—"Andante ” and “ Presto from trio for piano, violin, and ’cello, played bv Mrs B, Nees. Mrs J. Moffett, Miss Ngaio Garland. Miss Kay Stubbs sang “ May Song,” and later “ Creation Hymn,” with Miss Jessie Jones as accompanist. Mrs, Campbell played “ F sharp major” Sonata and “Largo” from E flat Sonata. The three ladies of the trio, with Miss L. Rattigan to play viola, gave the “ Rondo ” from a quartet, and Miss Mary Frazer played two jolly “ Country Dances.”
