A yankco tournament, organised fort the purpose of - saying farewell to P. Hawksworth,’- who is shortly, to'leavn Dunedin and commence businesein Hamilton, was held by the Twenty Club 6a ■Monday evening. An- enjoyable tournament, was won by Hawksworth and Misa Blackie, and at the supper adjournment the president of the club (Mr E. H. Ferguson) ' expressed the good wishes,of tha members to the guest of honour. 'An opportunity, was also taken; to congratulate Dr Simpcock on her recent marriag* to_ a member of the Windsor Club, .beat wishes for the future happiness of : th« pair being expressed. ' t ; Excellent badminton was’ seen at,. tha Wanganui Drill Hall on Saturday night, when the,‘finals of;the-.'New Zealand badminton , tournament were ? held,* large number of, Spectators; being- present. The outstanding playey of‘the; tournament; vma ; Eow,"of Hamilton, who reached' three- of -the five finals and won the Men’s Singles title, and. with Fear, the Men’s-Doubles, Powwon the Singles<title from the holder, Ellett,. of Auckland, after;• two- straight sets, establishing a comfortable -■margin in each. With Fear he had a hard tussle,to win. from the' Webington player* Reid and Roussell, the first set* being lost. by 17; to 18. , -..Pear; add-Fcny; cbinbined:■ better in'the next -set and’ won with four ‘points, to'spare,; and,, in the third set, had a decided* advantage over their opponents. ‘The Ladies’ Singles final saw Miss Ellett and Miss Ramsay etart the first set with plenty of ; vim,- . with : the result that. Miss Ellett only managed to take the set by two points. The second set saw Miss Ramsay, definitely superior, but Miss -Ellett rallied-for ■ the last set, which she won 11-—4; thus securing the title.- • These - tjyo' ladies were .opposed again in the Doubles: Championship, Mia* Ellett being partnered. : by Mrs Wren and Mi® B Ramsay by Miss Waters. The Championship went to- Miss -Ellett. and Mrs Wren in two straight'., set?. Mies Ellett, who hails from Auckland, played, excellent, badminton throughout. Mr* Wren also got ‘ through to the Combined Doubles, in Vdiich she' was, partnered by Hull.; They won|fdiely-, easily from -Pow and Mrs ? Fow in 'two sets. ' Severab-ini ter’esting games* were: played in the B Grade, the- hardest- match being in the Ladies’ Doubles, which Mrs Fow. and Mias Edmondson won from Misses Brodie and Ecclcs after three hard sets.
