SUM OF MONEY DEMANDED NAVAL MECHANIC ARRESTED NEW YORK,' August 30. (Received August 31, at 10.15 p.m.) A threat to harm President Roosevelt and kidnap three of his grandchildren was revealed to-day with the arrest of Benjamin Varney, a former naval aviation mechanic, by Secret Service operatives, who declined to reveal details. From other sources it. was learned that the threat was contained in a letter addressed to Mrs Roosevelt at White House ami demanded a large sum of money, “ or else my gang ” will kidnap the two-months-old baby of Elliott Roosevelt and the two children of Mrs Anna Dali. The letter did not reveal the nature of the harm to President Roosevelt.
