LABOUR POLICY
ADDRESS BY MR J. GILCHRIST
In the Trades Hall last evening Mr J. Gilchriet delivered an address to the members of the Labour Party residing in Dunedin West. , .In his opening remarks the speaker dealt with the policy and.principles of the party, but concentrated on the . third article ■•■ o- the object!ve—the socialisation of exchange. ’ He maintained that in it the party possessed the key to unlock the door and make possible its great schemes of development ; work. He then passed on to the subject of education, and said the Labour Party tfould pay particular attention to , and. effect a complete- transformation of what were now, in the shape of the primary schools, but mass production factories of mob.' intellect. These, institutions presented a sorry, spectacle of understaffing and underfurnishing. ; Schools would then ‘he places in which individuality and personality, would be carefully nurtured. The Labour Party would see to it that the gains at the ballot .box would be consolidated by an up-to-date teaching or drawing out of;, the highest and best powers of the young. The teachers were not to blame for. the present bad system, and they could, he thought, be trusted, within very wide limits with the administration of educati°n. , In the concluding portion of his address, Mr Gilchrist dealt with other aspects of Labour’s social service policy, notably in' respect to the health Of the people. He stated that a’gieat amount of service was at present rendered by the medical profession with little of no monetary return, and the profession was ripe for, socialisation.
