When Dame Madge Kendal went to a party at Bethnal Green lately she was delighted with a little surprise prepared for her. The children of St. Jude’s School, dressed as Red Indians, acted “ Hiawatha ” with such spirit that they surprised the large audience of grownups who had been expecting sing-song monotony. All the girls were under ten, and one showed such promise that she was congratulated by the famous actress. Because one-half of London does not know how the other half lives a well-known social worker, who lives in a beautiful seventeenth-century house in Bethnal Green, has been giving a series of “at homes," and many of her West End friends have been able to meet her East End friends and exchange ideas.
