TROTTING NOTES
By Sb'NTINEL. ,
Acceptances for the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club e meeting will close, on Tuesday, August 7, Agile recently enjoyed' a spell, and Iqe lias come back to work looking in fine order to face a preparation for the new’ season. He has proved a good winner during this season, and will show further improvement with more time. Travis Pringle had every chance in the Introductory Handicap, decided over 10 furlongs on the first day at Greymouth, but he failed badly over the business stages. The speed De Soto displayed on the first day at Greymouth on Wednesday astounded the critics, and if ever he becomes reliable at the barrier he will win several races. He is certain to be a hot favourite to-day. It is stated that Bingen Palm had only been in work three weeks prior to, racing at Greymouth on Wednesday, when he just failed to beat Great Antrim in a mile and a quarter race. If the race does him good he will be prominent today. >. ‘ Not one horse in the slow-class trotters’ race’at Greymouth went steadily for half a mile. The field was one of first-class breakers. Flotsam won, but not without going to several breaks. Where he had an advantage ever the opposition, was his ability to lose little ground, as he was steadied quickly. Ayr Lass ran a poor race in the Winter, Handicap at Greymouth, and finished last. In the Dash Handicap she tangled at the start, and was not. persevered with after covering two furlongs. A big improvement will have to be worked on her before she can confidently face up to the class she i s now meeting. Mr B. P. Spiers has acquired the grey pacing mare, Lil Guy, and has placed her in N. C. Price’s stable. Lil Guy competed in the Introductory Handicap .on the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting, but she could not handle the soft going. She is a quick beginner and has enough speed to win a mile and a quarter race, but it is evident that she needs a firm track. She is engaged at Greymouth to-day. Black Shadow handled the small track at Greymouth on Wednesday in excellent style, not departing more than a foot from the rails. She was in front from the start, and was never headed, Lynley de Oro and later Blandford tried out the leader's speed, and found that he could not he headed. Black Shadow won by a length with something in reserve at the finish, while Lynley de Oro and Blandford, who finished very fast, were doing their best.
