BALCLUTHA Mr Thomas Soper, of Pukeawa, has purchased the Toshvalc farm property of 85 acres adjoining Balclutha, at a price of over £SO an acre, including the residence. Two years ago the property—which is mostly flat land lying within the town area—was subdivided and offered at auction in small farm areas, but the reserve prices were not reached and 1 the property was withdrawn. It is understood that Mr Soper will not enter into possession of the farm for some time. At a meeting of Clutha Valley settlers held at Clydevale considerable discussion took place on the question whether Clydevale or Tuapeka Mouth would be the better site for a bridge over the Molyneux River. The meeting agreed that the Government should be asked, to fix upon a site, and that an estimate of, should be obtained. Mr \Y. J. M'Kenzie, chairman of the Clutha County Council, stated that a petition, endorsed by the council, had been sent to the Minister of Public Works asking for a bridge at_ Clydevale. Mr P. M'Skimming, M.P., said that he was opposed to extravagant expenditure at the present time, whether on bridges.or other public works, which the country might not be able to afford. A sale by auction of household furniture and effects on the, premises known as the Federal Private Hotel (late Coffee Palace) will take place on August 30. PALMERSTON The Palmerston and Waikouaiti Primary Schools met in a Rugby football match on the Palmerston Recreation Reserve on Thursday afternoon, the home side gaining an easy victory by 17 points to nil. Heenan, Gunn, Moore, Kennett, and Johnston scored tries, and Wright converted one. Mr I. M. Willoughby was The No, 1 A Grade Rugby football team from the Otago Boys' High School travelled to Palmerston yesterday and met the first fifteen from the local High School on the Recreation Reserve, The game, which was interesting throughout, was won by Palmerston by 15 points to 6. Mr R. T. Stewart was the referee. Constable A. J. Kelly, of Rotorua, who is to take charge of the Palmerston Police Station in place of Constable P. J. Margin, who has resigned owing to illness, arrived from the north yesterday. Constable J. Patterson, who has been relieving here for some time will leave for Dunedin today. ALEXANDRA Prior to his departure for Winton, Mr S. J. Pierce, who has been on the staff of the local Post and Telegraph Office for the past eight years, was entertained by a number of friends at a social evening and presented with a case of military hair brushes. Mr M'llroy, of Christchurch, has been transferred to the staff of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand in place of Mr F. H. Boyce, who has been transferred to Christchurch. RANFURLY The Maniototo Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on Monday last. There was a good attendance. The winner of the button for the best shot off the rifle was H. Laing, and the handicap button was won by A. Aitchison. The best shots returned were:—W. Norris 79, H. Laing 78, J. Phillip 78. W. Aitken 78, W. Pringle 77, A. Macdonald 77, J. D. Cromb 76, S. The David Baxter Cup curling competition was played at Naseby on Tuesday. A large crowd took advantage of the ideal conditions, and a full day’s curling and skating, was enjoyed. . The first competition for the Black and White Cup was played on Thursday, and resulted in a win.for Mount Ida rink — Messrs Barr, R. Duncan, Palmer, and L. Fox (skip). Points games were played yesterday for the Naseby Stoup by the Mount Ida Club, for Callender Trophy by Central Otago, and for the president’s trophy by Naseby clubs. 1
