MASS SACRIFICE OF ANIMALS
APPEASEMENT OF GODDESS
CALCUTTA, June 18,
Despite protests by the press and the public, another mass sacrifice of animals was carried out at Elloi’e, Thousands of animals were slaughtered in ,the streets in propitiation of the goddess of smallpox, who refused to be appeased when 6000 were thus sacrificed on May 25. The streets reeked of blood, and the whole town presented a ghastly appearance. Carcasses were everywhere.
