UNEMPLOYED DEMONSTRATION

FRUSTRATED BY POLICE FIVE MEN ARRESTED (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., June 9. . Though both the police and the municipal authorities had prohibited processions or demonstrations, an attempt was made this morning by the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement to hold a PKocession. Men and women forming in Rangitikei street resulted in slight disorder, and the footways were crowded by spectators; but before the situation could develop the police had it under complete control and had made several arrests, some resistance being offered. • Following urgings by megaphone from an upstairs window in the N.U.W.M. building, a band of about 50, led by women, issued from the premises and proceeded up the footpath for a short distance. They then moved to the road with banners to form a procession. Ihey were informed by a police sergeant that they must disband, but attempted to proceed, whereupon constables who had been patrolling the footpath came out to break up the demonstration. When resistance was offered five men were arrested and. taken to the police station in motor cars. Various chances will be preferred. The police, under Inspector Rawle, dealt speedily with events, and soon conditions in the street were almost normal. The five men will be charged on Monday.
