THE RAILWAYS BOARD
FREIGHT-CUTTING POLICY EFFECT ON SHIPPING SERVICES (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 9. Replying to the statement of Mr G. H. Macklcy, general manager of rail ways, Mr Ernest Davis) chairman of directors of the Northern Steamship Company, says that it was true that at a conference held between the Harbours’ Association, the Ship Owners’ Federation and the Railways Board, it was agreed that the position was a very difficult one and that no solution had been reached for the simple reason that the Railways Board was not prepared to alter its freight-cutting policy as affecting shipping. The board definitely laid it down that it would fix what freights it thought fit without regard to the injury to the existing shipping service. It was nonsense to suggest that the conference recognised that the policy of the Railways Board from a national point of view could not be fairly criticised. The deputation had waited on the board for that very purpose and expressed its disappointment when it received the Railways Board’s reply.
