“THE DOVER ROAD”
The performance of “ Rope ” last year by members of the Otago University Dramatic Society will be remembered for its high standard of amateur acting. The society’s choice this year is to be A. A. Milne’s comedy, “The Dover Road,” no doubt familiar to most people interested in contemporary drama. The play itself bears an obvious contrast to “ Rope,” and is no less enjoyable. It will be quite enough to say that it is a characteristically A. A. Milne creation, combining a light, whimsical plot with witty dialogue, and, in spite of the irresponsible treatment, managing to convince the listener that perhaps there is a serious lesson to be learnt after all. The theme “Marry in haste . . .’Ms not a new one. but the author knows himself well enough to rely on his original and capable treatment to carry off a variation of this motif with delightful ofleet. Tn securing the services of Miss Bessie Thomson for the production of the play, the students have been fortunate, and she will suffer from no lack of scope in the talent at her disposal. The performance is enterprisingly billed for three nights instead of two as in previous years—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Juno 21, 22. mid 23.
