Theatre today at three sessions and also on,Mondaynight, in the Gaumont-Brtisk film of J. B. Priestley's world-famous novel, "The Good Companions." The supporting cast is headed by Edmund Gwenn, probably the best-known character actor in England, and John Gielgud, who supplies the romontic interest. "Good Companions" is recognised, as the second best production so far released this year. OPERA HOUSE Just after a successful season at the Empire Theatre, Dunedin, the Paramount feature, "Tillie and Gus," will be shown at the Opera House this afternoon and to-night. W. C. Fields, Alison Skipworth and Baby Le Roy are the leading characters. ' The etory concerns two card " sharps," who delight in, looting the " wise guys" of the world, and who arrive on the scene just as the estate of Aunt Tillie's', brother is being settled. They stay on just to see how much "they can get but of it. When they suspect that the, attorney is looting the estate, they find that their love for the child ia greater than their desire for money. Accordingly they set out to haul the lawyer over the coals, and do go very successfully in their own inmitable manner. ■ OBITUARY . AWAMOA BRIDGE At the conclusion of the special_ meeting of the Waitaki County Council yesterday. Or Cooper brought under the notice of councillors the difficulty that was being experienced through the bad condition of the track on the west side of the Awamoa bridge, about one mile south of Oamaru. He said that motorists were unable to get through, and urged that something be done, even to keeping the bridge open for a week, until a suitable and safe crossing were made. Reconstruction work is being carried out at the bridge, owing to the recent rain the temporary crossing is boggy, and motorists need to exercise every care in going through. The engineer (Mr G. L. Cuthbertson) said that the wet weather ;had caused the trouble, but everything possible was being done to ensure that the crossing would be made solid and safe. It. was impossible to interfere with the contract, and, as motorists wanted the widening of the bridge they would have to put up with a certain amount _ of inconvenience. Quarry metal was being placed as quickly as possible on the crossing, regardless of cost, which would make the crossing safe for motorists. He' suggested,. however, in view of the wet weather—and he had already notified this through the papers—that motorists would be well advised to detour at Alma to the Awamoa road, whieh made the journey only a mile longer._ with much more satisfactory travelling. On the motion of Cr Meek the engineer was authorised to place a detour sign at Alma and the junction for the convenience of: motorists. '•'.
