ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT

(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW AN ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY After a lapse of over 25 years, the interest' of chrysanthemum growers of Oamaru has been revived to permit of the staging of an exceedingly attractive display of these glorious blooms in St. Luke’s Hall yesterday.' The show was held under the auspices of St. Lukes Church, and much credit for attaining such an outstanding success is due to,the organising ability and energy of the secretary (Mr A. E. C. Al'Douall), to whom is due the resumption of this popular exhibition of blooms. The hall presented a spectacle of flowers and foliage in Nature’s most beautiful tints, the delicacy of the colourings and healthy , appearance of the , blooms reflecting the care and attention bestowed by the growers. The stage end or the hall was fully occupied by a splendid display of pot plants shown by Mr G. S. Jones, of Oamaru, whose continued interest in these exhibitions is to be highly commended. The foliage was in a very healthy condition; and the display well worthy of the special attention given to it by-onlookers.« Another fine display was shown from the Oamaru Gardens, and here again the organisers are-indebted to the curator (Mr John Tait) for hia material assistance to; the success of the show. The display- consisted of foliage of .variegated colours, with pot plants, including primulas, surmounted by a fine. specimen ofY banana palm, the arrangement and beauty of the plants being of outstanding merit...... ...., , A commercial exhibit of no little interest to growers was of. the Breeze improved flower pot, the product of a Dunedin manufacturer. ‘ Made of coke breeze, porous, allowing fnoisture to penetrate to the plants, and of excellent finish, these pots are reported to be a boon to chrysanthemum growers,. Mr G. W. 0. .Lee, of Oamaru, plating’ that growers m D.unedin speak very highly of them as proving very successful. . V ... For exhibition only were two excellent stands shown - by Mr Brett-Shand (Timaru) and. Mr H. T. Trevena (Dunedin). Mr Brett-Shand’s. exhibit comprised * some, very ’fine blooms in / single; chrysanthemums in shades ranging from white to bronze. Included in the display w fere prize-winning blooms, in the Dun-, edin. Timaru, and Waimate Shows. An niinamed ; bronze seedling was perhaps the outstanding bloom, and there were also fiiie'jspecimens of the Avalanche and M. Blakely Varieties. Mr Trevena s display included;a beautiful specimen of Ked Hover, which took the award at Dunedin, and also‘ fine blooms of • Sheila, College l Girl, and' Otahuna Sunshine varieties. The single chrysanthemums and decorative blooms were a fine lot, the championship award going to four very nice blooms of the ; Healsville Bronze variety exhibited by Mrs J. C. Kirkness (Oamaru), In the exhibition chrysanthemums tnere was v a very commendable display, in! which the quality of the blooms was of a high standard. The championship award was secured' with a William Turner. bloom, of pure white and exquisite quality, shown by Mr C. Smith (Oamaru). A large bowl of autumn-tinted foliage, with marigolds and asparagus, cotoneaster and spiraea primi folia, shown by Mr J. E. Ewing, came in for much commendation for its artistic effect. The children’s- section attracted good competition among the young people, who are to be congratulated on the really fine exhibits tliat were shown. The decorative classes were also well represented with pleasing effect, qnd the quality of the fruit and-vegetables was excellent. Mrs Corlett’s collection' of apples was worthy of special, mention, as was also the collection of vegetables grown by unemployed boys, under the direction of Mr J. 'Kearns.' MAJESTIC PICTURES For the final time the breach of promise suit of the century —With Slim Summerville as the lawyer and : Zasu Pitts as the girl who has been promised—shows tonight at the Majestic Theatre. Based on the Broadway stage hit, “ Love, Honour, and Oh, Baby,” is by far the most uproarious of the popular Summerville-Pitts co-starring comedies produced by Universal. The plot revolves round Slim, cast as a ne’er-do-well lawyer, and Zasu, filing clerk, who gets all the facts, of life from her banker-vegetarian-pbilandering employer. Verree Teasdale makes a devastating blonde villainess. Sharing these experiences with Slim and Zasu, in one way of another, are George Barbier, Lucille Gleason, Miss Teasdale, Donald Meek, Purnell Pratt, and Adriene Dore, the last-named said to be one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Amongst the supports is the latest of the Ely Culbertson bridge series.
