OXFORD DEFEATED

AN INNINGS AND 33 RUNS OLDFIELD IN FINE FORM (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, May 21. The match between Australia and Oxford University was resumed sensationally. Fleetwood-Smith, who was brought on to allow Ebeling to change ends, took three wickets for no runs in his first over, clean bowling Mitchell-Innes. Chalk, and Stainton with his first, third, and fourth balls. Fleetwood-Smith flighted off-spinners into a stiff breeze, and completely deceived all three batsmen. The total was then five for 15, and with 48 on the hoard two more wickets fell, those of Walker and Tindall. The match was also providing for Ebeling his most successful appearance of the tour. He obtained two further wickets, those of Barlow and Singleton, with successive balls. The side was all out after 80 minutes. Oldfield was excellent behind the wicket, effecting two very fine stampings in addition to allowing no extras. The wicket was not really difficult, but Fleetwood-Smith turned the ball abruptly. Oxford followed on. Grimmett and Ebeling bowled after lunch, the latter soon dismissing Townsend with a fast inswinger, and two overs later, finding the wicket more lively, he got Walker Well caught behind. De Sarm and Mitchell-Innes were scoring well until the latter was caught behind. De Sarm and Chalk figured in a promising stand until the latter fell a victim to the Grimmett-Oldfleld combination. De Sarm was batting with admirable sonndnesss, scoring 10 in one over from Grimmett, and lifting Fleet-wood-Smith for 6. He reached 50 after 90 minutes’ play. Eight thousand were present after tea. De Sarm continued attractively, hut lost Stainton, who had batted stubbornly for 95 minutes for 12 runs. De gam powerfuly swung .Grimmett for a four and a six oft successive balls. His splendid 100 occupied 165 minutes. He then hit with abandon, straight driving Grimmett and swinging FleetwoodSmith for a six apiece. Eventually Grimmett got him nicely caught on the boundary. 4 De Sarm batted 185 minutes, hitting four sixes and 18 fours. Australia won by an innings and 33 runs.
