ATTEMPTED BURGLARY
INTRUDER INTERRUPTED HURRIED ESCAPE OVER FENCES. (Pee United Pbess association.) ROTORUA, May 21. An unsuccessful attempt was made in the early hours of Monday morning to break open a safe in the Rotorua Bus Company's premises in Fen ton street. The attention of the night; watchman was attracted to a dull'boom, and on proceedingto open the office doors he was just in time to see a mail making his. escape through a garage which adjoins the office. The intruder rushed through the garage, breaking a window at the rear, and escaping over the fences of the adjoining houses. The night watchman gave the alarm, but the intruder had too long a start and made good his escape. Access to the premises was obtained by forcing the main garage doors and breaking the Avindow o£ the office. A charge of gelignite was rammed into the keyhole of the safe and was muffled with a number of old coats, but the first shot was unsuccessful in the breaking of the'lock and the burglar was in the act of laying a second charge when he was interrupted. The only money in the safe was a sum approximating £.i.
