A BRUTAL ASSAULT

ATTACK ON YOUNG MAN TWO ARRESTS FOLLOW (Peb United Pbess Association.) WANGANUI, May 10.; A sensation was caused here this morning when it was learned that the night attendant at Bowsers Limited, a service station at the corner of the Avenue and Plymouth street, CharlesHerbert Quinlan, aged 20, had been attacked by two young men. He < was struck several times on the head with a paling, his hands and legs were bound, the premises were ransacked, and a small quantity of silver and stamps stolen. This occurred at 1.30 a.m., and later Constable Christmas and Detective Walsh arrested two local young menThomas Benjamin Raymond and Robert Woodham. The accused were charged with robbing and wounding Quinlan, and were remanded until May 17. Detective Walsh, in opposing bail, said a murderous attack had been made on Quinlan, and he was in hospital •in a serious condition. One of the assailants called out to Quinlan that he wanted four gallons of benzine in a hurry, and as soon as he opened the door he was dazzled by the lights of a car, and struck on the head and knocked down, when he received further blows.
