COUNTRY NEWS

PALMERSTON The chairman (Mr J. A. Jull) presided over■••■ the-monthly meeting of the committee of the Paimerston District High School on Monday evening. There was a very good attendance. Accounts totalling £5 14s were passed for payment. Messrs W. J. M'Kenney, jun., and G. Smith were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. It was decided to apply to the Paimerston Borough Council for spoil from the culvert at present being repaired for the purpose or raising the school garden above flood level. : KUROW From time to time agricultural experiments are carried out at the Kurow District High School, the latest being with yellow Belgian carrot. Rows were sown and treated with green "manure which had been allowed to. rot,- and to wMch was added ground' carbonate of lime. Other rows were' sown were not treated, but it is interesting to : note that in the former case carrots weighing as much as 4lb were taken from_ the rows. ;The results of these experiments are forwarded to the Department of lAgriculture in Wellington, and have also proved of immense value to farmers in this district.

Owing to the unvoidable absence of the president, Mr J. R. Moody occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Waitaki Hydro Golf Club, there being a fair attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr J. R. Moody; secretary and'treasurer, Mr IV B. Ohlson; club captain, Mr Cameron; committee —Messrs C. H. P. Ryan, J. Brennan, N. Jones, H. B. Murrow, and A. Ramage. There was a large attendance of members and friends at game of-t' ne season, and the president, alter •welcoming the guests and referring to the sound position of the club, called on Mrs Moody to drive the first ball off the tee. A twoball foursome was then played,. the winners being Mrs Ryan and Mr S. Cuthbertson with a net score of 36. Other good scores were those of P. Kelleher and A. Ramage (43), Mrs Thorburn and Mr N. Jones (43), Messrs L. Clark and E. Murrow (44), Miss Smith and Mr D. Cameron (45), Mrs Ramage and Mr 0. L. Cuthbertson (46), Messrs H. Murrow and J. Brennan (46), Miss P. Lawson and Mr F.'B. The C.R., Bro. G. Duffy, presided oyer a large attendance of brothers and sisters at the monthly meeting of the Court Pride of Waitaki, A.0.F., 6533. The woodwards reported that two members were on the sick list and sick pay'claims were passed for -payment. It was decided to hold meetings, fortnightly, on. the second and last Mondays of each month. A very interesting address was., given by Bro. J. C. Chapman, who was the delegate to the conference in Dunedin during Easter. It was pleasing to hear him report that the lodge had been placed second for the James Macfie Memorial Shield for the court securing the most new members each year.- The court also showed the lowest rate of sickness for Otago and Southland last year.

CROMWELL

There is a good deal of sickness from influenza in the town at present, the sufr ferers being affected in various ■ ways. With some the attack is fairly- severe. ■ ■ The report presented to the; annual meeting of the Cromwell Aero Club,' presided over by .Mri J. R. .Munro, • showed : that the club had -had a most successful first year of existence. Reference was made to the visits of Sir Charles'Kingsford Smith and Mr C. T. P. Ulm, and also to the air pageant in which 12 planes took part. Another outstanding feature was that the club had four :flying meihr bers, three brothers among these, the Bell brothers, securing 'their "A" licenses. The other member was' Mr,D. Grant, whb< previously held a license but continued training. The also made reference to the manner. in which the club was serviced by the Otago Aero Club and its instructor (Flight-lieutenant Olson). Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—rPresident, Mr J. R. Munro; vice-presidents—the Mayor (Mr Roberts), and the Deputy Mayor (Mr Sanders); committee—Messrs W.* Johnson, E. Jolly, C. W. Bilton. , A special vote of thanks was accorded the secretary, for his services last year. Of two competitions firejl by the Defence Rifle Club the firet was 'for a club trophy, to count in the aggregate. The conditions'were 10 shots at 300, yards and 500 yards, and some of the marksmen were in good form, going close to a possible at 500 yards. The leading scores were: W. Veint (hep,, scr), 47—49, 96; T. Grabbe (2), 45—49. 96; J. Jocelyn {B)\ 42—44, 94; V. Parcell (13), 39—42, 94; W: Webb (4), 43—46, 93. The'second competition was seven shots at 300 yards. 500. yards, and 600 ; yards, to count for the president's trophy. The principal scores were: F. Middleton 93, A. Bell .92, T. A. Crabbe 91, J. Jocelyn 90, W. Veint 88, W. Webb Bs, J. A. Parcel!: 85, J. C. Parcell 83. In the first round of the Railway Rifle Club's weekly shoot for a club • trophy five competitors tied with possibles, including handicap,. J. C. Parcell securing a possible on the target. In the shootoff he withdrew, and-the-trophy was won by V. Sanders. The gold button went to J. C. Parcell, and the handicap button to G. Hansen. Scores: J. C. Parcell. 80 —2—Bo: A. The district has experienced another phenomenal. fall of rain,. extending over the best part of; three, days. On Wednesday ram set in, .with. conditions ex? treme'ly mild,, and continued until early on Saturday. Late in the week conditions were more wintry, snow falling on the hills. However, the weather is still exceptionally mild. Frost has been almost entirely absent so far, and some residents are still gathering tomatoes from outdoor plants.' Traffic over the Carrick Range to Nevis is still uninterrupted, there being little or no snow on the heights yet. There is now a prospect of frost.

STIRLING

There was d large attendance on Thursday evening at a farewell social tendered to Miss Briscoe, in the. Athensum Hail, Stirling. Prior to supper Mr,D. Boyd, on behalf of the public of Stirling, pre* sen ted the guest with a wallet,; with the contents of which he asked her to place in her new home some article which would remind her of Stirling friends. On behalf of the School Committee and staff, Mr P. A. Low presented Miss_ Briscoe with, a pyrex and brass fruity dish. .Mr s C. Richardson, the president of the Lawn Tennis Club, spoke of Miss Briscoe's untiring work as secretary of the club and presented her with a. salad bowl and servers. . Mr Slater, headmaster, also expressed appreciation of Miss Briscoe's six years' service in the school. Mr D. B. Boyd. On Thursday afternoon, the Stirling School lawn tennis tournament .was com-pleted-in the presence of a gathering of parents. In the final, R. M'Kinlay defeated L. Low 21—14. Miss Briscoe pre-, sented .the prizes to the winner and runner-up. Master Gerald Anderson then wished Miss Briscoe happiness and prosperity on her approaching marriage, and on behalf of the pupils presented her with a seagrass chair as of their appreciation. Miss Briscoe feelingly responded.
