TAPANUI BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING (Fuom Our Own L'oßHKsrq.viißjNT.) TAPANUI, May 8. The monthly meeting of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday eveuing. There were present the Mayor (Mr J. S.Varcoe), Crs D, H. Keir, R. Duff, W. 15. Naylor, W. Brims, and W. Wright. Apologies were received from Crs j., L. Wylie and D. A. M'Donald. CORRESPONDENCE. J. F. Rodger, secretary of the Gymnastic Club, applied for permission to use the Athenamm Hall on two nights per week on the same conditions as last year.—-Granted. G. Chandler applied for permission to remove all dead timber lying in Whisky Gully for the purpose of cutting this into fencing posts and firewood. He undertook to safeguard all standing bush and tracks.—Permission refused, the couucil having no power to grant the application. The secretary of the Tapanui Football Club wrote.askiug the council's permission to use. the Athenaeum Hall for one night a week.—Granted. REPORTS. The Reserves Committee reported that the limbs and firewood cut off the trees at the racecourse aud cricket ground had all beeti sold, together with a quantity of posts. The borough reserves, which had recently been submitted to auction had all brought better prices than last year. The Hall Committee reported that the fireproof picture box at the end of the Town Hall had been removed and sold 'for £5. The hall floor had been repaired aud some necessary glazing done. GENERAL.

After discussion it was decided not to forward to the Highways Board auy estimate for tar-sealing that portion of the main highway- passing through the borough, but only to forward an estimate for maintenance. The Hall Committee was authorised ro arrauge for the erection of a light to be placed outside the library door. It was resolved to open a Post Office account in the name of Whisky Gully Domain, the town clerk and Cr Keir f o be the trustees.

Cr Wright's notice of motion that the resolution passed on March 5 in reference to the manse fence in Forest street should be rescinded and that the Works Committee should be empowered to execute any necessary work there was carried after an amendment moved by Cr Xa.vlor —"That the church committ.>o should be invited to attend the next council meeting to discuss the matter " bad been defeated.
