RADIO BROADCASTING

A VARIETY OF ITEMS SUBSIDY FOR B STATIONS. Owing to the poorness of the reception in their respective areas, radio listeners in Central Otago and Nelson Save been endeavouring fof some .tint*;to obtain a subsidy for the B stations which serve them, and Mr H. Booth,.the local member of the Advisory Council to the.-New Zealand Broadcasting Board, has received advice that two members of the board's engineering staff have left for Nelson to carry out tests in that ares;. The work is expected to occupy about a fortnight. The board has decided to follow the advice' of the council in regard to making tests in Central Otago. Although it is not possible to indicate at present when the tests will commence in that area, no time will be lost in getting to work. Definite instructions- have been issued to the stations that Sacing results are not to be broadcast during the children's, sessions. When necessary ■ the:children's sessions will conclude five minutes earlier, and the results be broadcast between 5.55 and 6 p.m. - The board has noted the recommendation of the council in regard to the broadcasting of comic operas, and wishes it made clear that it is already the board's policy to secure the broadcasting of such performances whenever possible. Another matter dealt with by the council at its last meeting was in connection with the broadcasting of controversial matter. The Postmaster-general has been communicated with regarding the regulation governing controversial speech Orer the air, and it is hoped- that something will be done as a result of the representations.
