FIRES

EMPTY HOUSE GUTTED. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning the City Eire Brigade received a call to 28 Jackson street, St. Kikla, where fire had broken out in a four-roomed unoccupied dwelling owned by Mr Harold Banks The fir'e had a firm hold when the brigade arrived, and at first the water pressure was poor. When the pump from tho Central Station reached the scene, however, an affective was obtained, and although two rooms were gutted the brigadesmen managed to save the remainder of the building and prevent the lire seriously damaging the adjoining residence, the walls of which wore slightly scorched. 'The occupier of Air Banks’s house vacated the premises at 5 o’clock on Tuesday evening, and it is (bought that the outbreak may have been caused by some rubbish left burning in one of the fireplaces.

A ROOF DAMAGED. The City Fire Brigade turned nut at 11.58 a.m. yesterday to an outbreak of fire in a bouse at 73 Playfair street. Caversham, owned by Mr D. M. Sutherland and occupied by Mr T. Searle. but the damage was not extensive, only portion of the roof being burned. The fire was caused by a faulty destructor.
