LAWN TENNIS UNION

The A Grade competition has now. been completed, and the shield becomes,. for the first time, the possession of the Kaikorai Club. The complete results of the competition are as folows: — •

The Knox Church y'. i'irst Church match, played on Saturday; was. won by the'former team, by, a small margin) the success of the Knox ladie a ,in bpth the Singles and Doubles, events being the der eiding' factor. The-most- closely-contested .matches were, the third Men's ...and the third Ladies', Singles, both of. which were wpn by the Knox players after a. most interesting contest. ,- ■-.-: : Miss R. Clark (Kensington) was. the only member of the Kensington A /team to win a,set in the match with Havensbourne. ', ■ i ■ .Keen interest. was -, indicated', by the presence of a.good number.of spectators s at the final/match between the two. leading .teams-r-Kaikorai and Tainui., There \yas not much between the teams, almost every.game being closely.contested, vhe Kaikorai ladies showed their' best, form, and won. three, of the four Singles, and this accounted, considerably for the victory of their-team. Mrs Jones's services and placements proved too effective for Miss Broddbent in their Single,. and she won *6—3.' •'. Miss Fitchett defeated Mrs Colbert'7—s in a very interesting game. Miss-CameVon...(Tainui) proved too steady for Miss Sutherland, _ and won .6—3,, but Miss: Jones (Kaikorai) reversed her defeat by M r s Ogg in. the first round .arid won 6—3. In the Men's Singles Carr and Colbert served and .drove too .well for. Jones and'Dixon and won 6—4 and 6-—2 ; respectively. . The other two Men's Singles were hard fought, Laurie running Gonrley to 7—5, and Thomas, after being down 4—2, winning 6—4. The first Men's Doubles was a fast game, but the Kaikorai ..pair proved too accurate for their opponents, while the second Tainui men were too steady for the Kaikorai pair. The first Mixed' Doubles went to Tainui, the 'third and fourth to Kaikorai. The second Mixed Doubles was unfinished on account of rain.

It seems likely that the C Grade match between Kiwi and Fire Brigade will be won by the former team, and in that case Kiwi will play Aotea'at;the Macandrew Road courts on Saturday next. C. O'Driscoll- (Macandrew Road) lost a, ladder challenge against J. Wallace (Knox Church) 9—6. " . ,
