THE REDPATH SHIELD"The eight Canterbury rinks which represented .the northern .province against Otago>on the Caledonian green on Thursday last effected a surprise by. defeating Otago, and. in' no uncertain manner,, in the annual match for: the Rcdpath Shield. Although the' Otago team could have been materially strengthened, it contained a solid representation of proriiinent players, and it must be "remembered that t|ie visiting team is always placed at'a disadvantage as' it is almost, impossible to., get 'eight- rinks 'to travel' that can in any way be "considered representative' of the province. •'Many . players . whose claims could not be passed, over cannot afford the time nop the /expense to travel. This is the great difficulty with which the , are faced. Then when the game, is- played 'at home the eejectors feel, in duty bound to give preference to the players who, .the previous year, travelled at their..own personal. expense. And who can blame the selectors? '.. There are Vnot a, feW prominent players who have both the time and the money to spare, but who will not, travel away from home. ' Surely these players are hot Entitled' to consideration When the game is played'at home. . The, case, of course, is different when a player, is worthy of'selection in* a representative team, but who cannot afford to make the trip. A correspondent, "Merit," writing in last Saturday's Daily Times, eritfcises; the method of selection- of the Otago teams, and suggests that the selectors of the various clubs be asked to nominate player e they consider Worthy, ot selection.' What is the use'of a selector nominating a player unless he knows the' player is prepared to travel.' Under the present system, players who are willing to travel are asked to send their names to thie secretary of their clubs,* and as far as Otago is concerned the selectors usually'find that they have difficulty in getting the required" numbfer of names, with the result that a team that could hot by any stretch of imagination be called representative, is finally selected. Still, the selectors have to do the best they can'with, the material offering, "Merit" outlines .what Would happen, if the Rugby Union selected its teams'on similar lines' to that, of the Bowling; Centre, but one can imagine the kind of team that would represent'Otago if Rugby players "had .to pay :'their own expenses when oh tour..'' .It is quite futilej for "Merit" to introduce such a comparison. Where, I think; the .selectors are deserving of criticism is perhaps in not making th.e best use of the players aVailable.Lopking at the results of last Thursday Vgame one can o'nly conclude that. Some of the Otago rinks were very ill-balanced, v ■■' Reverting to the game itself the Canterbury men- did well to finish.the morning game only a few points in arrears, and having got the feel of the green, which, by the way, was in remarkably fine order, they showed marked improvement in the afternoon. In the morning game Carswell went down heavily ,to. A. Dickson, the latter winning'by 34 points to 14, and. in the afternoon the Rev. Mr Bandy (Christ, church) trounced W. Connor to the tune of 42 points to 13, and, Hughes .beat. E. Harraway by'3l joints to 14. With such heavy reverses, Otago' was perhaps lucky to escape with the defeat of 32 points which it suffered..' ",.. 1 ' . \ . ,-, Each province has won the shield on seven occasions, Canterbury having won the last four games, so it is to he hoped that Otago will make a special effort, next year to. send a team that will extend the Canterbury.men to the limit'. ,', , ■■', ■. ; . It is worthy of note that, the only Can : terbury slip' 'to noich: two' ■wins was A, Dickson. Dickson first started bowling in the Taieri Club, but has, been a resident of Christchur'ch for. niany.years. * EASTER TOURNAMENT • Bowlers are reminded that entries for the Easter tournament close at Mr Manning's office oh Thursday, March, .22, at 5 p.m.. It is expected the entries will, be large,.as the tournament has_. grown in popularity each year, and the, factthat faster is earlier than, usual. will ,ho: doubt weigh; with a, number 1 . of howlers., ' ;■' ;.. ; ; -:, , :'■''■'■■ - " ■'"' .-

the Canterbury- Singles Championship. Already much, interest is being shown m the tournament, which promises to be highly SUCCGSSIuIt Another Easter fixture is the annual tournament of the Tuapeka Sub-associa-tion; which will-be held on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Monday. There is a full programme of events, and every effort will be made to complete the championships bri the , Friday. and Saturday, and to advance' the handicap events as far as possible on the same, days.
