AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING AT KAITANGATA Mr J. C. Smith, president, presided over a large attendance of members at the Kaitangata Athletic Club meeting on Saturday evening last. The secretary reported that there were record entries for the various events at the meeting to be held next Saturay. Final arrangmnents were made for having the ground marked off' for the different events.

There will be various events for which entries may be received on the ground, such as the tug-of-war for teams of five men, total weight 55 stone; bicycle races; primary schools' relay race for boys and girls, teams of four; youths' handicap, 16 years and under; ladies' races; boys' obstacle race for primary schools; throwing cricket ball; kicking the football; stepping the distance; and piping and dancing. With an excursion from Dunedh), the president stated that there was every chance of this meeting being a record for Kaitangata, and the committee should make the sports as interesting as possible and see that there was not a dull moment during the whole clay. The president stated that the Kaitangata Coal Company had co-operated with the Otago Centre Athletic and Cycling Union in arranging the excursion to Kaitangata, and that the company was providing hot water, tea, milk, and sugar at Victoria Park on the arrival of the train about 10.15 a.m. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Fenton) also stated that arrangements would be made for the shops to be closed at 11.30 a.m.
