RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club rooms last night, there being present Messrs A. J. Gordon (president),- A. M'Hutchon, W. F. Forrester, A. G. Leeden, G. H. Ferens, J. L. Napier, P. S. Anderson, A. C. Laing, Ben Ellis, H. L. Paterson, J. S. Skinner, and O. L. Ferens (secretary).. Fourteen nominations for membership and one nomination for honorary membership were accepted, and two outward transfers were approved. The Dunedin membership figures totalled 2154, as compared with the Christchurch membership bf 2018.

The Unemployment Committee reported that Mr H. Mackay, of Wanaka Motors, Ltd., had offered to transport,« free qf charge, two tons and a-half of jam from Roxburgh to Dunedin.—lt was decided to express the association’s thanks to Mr Mackay for his generous offer. When arrangements in connection with the Anzac Day ceremony were being discusased Mr Paterson suggested that the Otago Aero Club could co-operate with the association by flying three planes Over the Cenotaph and dropping poppies or laurel leaves during the ceremony.—lt was decided to leave the matter in Mr Paterson’s hands. Mr H. L. Paterson produced a small memorial cross surmounted by a poppy, thousands of which were sold in Great Britain on Armistice Day. and said that these crosses were purchased by people t who were unable to secure wreaths, and were placed in the turf adjacent to churches. He suggested that the association take steps to secure supplies of these crosses for Anzac Day next year.—Mr Anderson said the matter had already been placed before headquarters, but had not been approved.—lt was decided to place the matter again before headquarters with a recommendation that the crosses be secured for Anzac Day next year. It was decided to send to Mr J. B. Callan. who had .been a member of the executive and a vice-president.of the association, congratulations on his elevation to the position of King’s Counsel.
