RIFLE SHOOTING

KIWI DEFENCE CLUB. The second competition of No. 5 Match was fired by members of the Kiwi Defence Rifle Club last Saturday in fine but dull weather. Seven shots and two optional sightcrs were fired at 300, 500, and 600 yards. Despite bad visibility, some good scores were registered, and for the second time this season a B Grade competitor (Rifleman J. Harding) was top score with 96. The third and final competition will be fired next Saturday,afternoon. The following are the scores, handicaps included: —

TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB. The Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the twenty-first match of the season on Saturday afternoon, the conditions of the shoot were seven shots at 300, .500, and 600, compulsory counters lo the championship score. There is very keen interest in the shoot, as the championship was very , close up to. this stage, the scores being: Paine 858, Murray 856, Jones 854. At 300 yards Murray required 30, Jones 29, and Paine 31, making him three in the lead of Murray. At 500 yards Murray again led off with 32, Jones with a 32, and Paine, secured 28, putting Murray one point in the lead. .The scores were: Murray 918, C., Paine 917, and Jones 915. At 600 yards Murray got 32 again, Jones 28, and Paine 24. The position now stands: Murray 950, Jones 943, and C. Paine 941, and Malcolm 931. The first trophy for the day was won by P. H. Fodeii with 99, H. Currie _ was second with 95, and L, Murray third with 94. The gold rifle was won by L. Murray With 94 off the rifle. The day saw the end of the B Grade aggregate, which was won by M. Headley, with B. Jefferson second, the two scores being 872 and_B7l. The finish ,of the hull’s-eye competition was also a close finish between Murray and Paine. The scores were: Murray 134 and Paine 133. The following are the scores:— ’ >

DUNEDIN DEFENCE CLUB. The Dunedin Defence Rifle Club shot the second competition for prizes presented by Captain G. C. Proudfoot and Mr H. J. Shaw on Saturday afternoon. There was an attendance of 22, and seven shots (two optional sighters) each were fired at 300, 500, and 600 yards. Except for very dull light, shooting conditions were fair. Several good scores were registered, notably by Riflemen W. A. Graham, R. G. Graham, and W. W. Denton. (34 each at 300 yards), Riflemen R. Leslie and G. H. Smith (33 each at 500 yards), and Riflemen J. M'Knight, A. J. Robson, and G. H. Smith (32 each at 600 yards). Rifleman W. A. Graham headed the days aggregate with 97, closely followed by Rifleman J. On Saturday the West Taien Defence Rifle Club fired the first match of No. G competition for prizes given by the club, the conditions being seven shots at 300 yards, 500 yards, and 600 yards. The day was very dull, with just a light leit wind blowing across the range. At 300 yards best scores were secured by Limeman D. G. Wyllie with (34) and Riflemen H Fraser. A. Fraser, D. Ashley, and is. Mitchell (32) and at 500 yards both Rifleman D. G. Wyllie and Rifleman A. H. Fraser secured possibles (35). Un going back to the longer range visibility gradually became poorer, the best scores being Rifleman A. Fraser and Deputypresident H. W. Brookes (S 3), and closely following were RifleuienW- J.
