OBITUARY

MR j: M. ALEXANDER The death occurred at. his residence in Duke street yesterday of MrJohn Mitchell Alexander, aged 81 years. Mr Alexander was born at Lawrence, and received his education at the Union Street School. In 1888 he joined the firm, of P. Hayman and Co., and seven years later he was made departmental manager. He became sub-manager of the firm in 1922, and retained that position until 1930, when he Was forced to retire on account of illness. . In his younger days Mr Alexander took a keen interest in sport. He was a member of the Union Football Club and he played in its first fifteen in the nineties. He also acted as secretary of the club for a number of years. About the same time he was an active member of the Albion Cricket Club. Later he joined the Dunedin Bowling Club, of which he was a member for overls years. For 38 years he was a member of the Knox Church choir and he sang-with the Royal Dunedin Male Choir for 33 years, being one of the life members of that organisation. Mr Alexander also' held the honour of being the first life member of the Otago Rugby Referees' Association. He is survived by his widow. MR E. N. ANDREWS (Peb United Pbess Association ) CHRISTCHURCH, March 6. The death has occurred of Mr Ernest Novello Andrews, aged 5b years, formerly well known in both islands as a buyer for overseas wool brokers. He represented the French and Belgian firm of Kreligner and Fernau in Christchurch for 17 years. The deceased learnt his business in Bradford and London.

THE REV. JAMES GUY (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 6. The death occurred in Christchurch today of the'; Rev.'James Guy, a retired minister of the Methodist Church. He began his ministry in Dunedin in 1876, and had held pastorates at Auckland, Wellington, New Plymouth, Christchurch, Ashhur'ton, Waimate and Invercargill. MR ALFRED DAVIES (Per United Press Association.) STRATFORD, March 8. The death is reported of Mr Alfred Davies, a well-known Public Works official who retired four years ago. The deceased was 69 years of age, and formerly resided in Nelson.
