PALMERSTON NOTES
(From Ocb owj* Cobbespondent.) . PALMERSTON, March 6. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Palmerston District High School was held last night, the chairman (Dr T. T. Thomas) presiding over a good attendance. A circular letter was' received from the Otago Education Board stating that it had decided to- delegate to school committees the power to, grant holidays for special occasions, not exceeding six halt days,for any;one year. This year, owing to the late starting, the number would be reduced to one, and all terms would start on Monday. Received. Miss E. M'Knight wrote asking permission to take ' Scripture lessons in her' class (Standard I) under the Nelson system. —The rector explained that this entailed only reading from the Bible, and stated. that he had no objection. The committee then granted the request.—The report of the rector (Mr C. F. Arnold) gave the primary roll aa 186 and attendance 178; secondary, 58 and 55. Mr R. J. Dempsey, Misses F. Dempsey, E. M'Knight, and M. Scott were assistants for this year under the rationing scheme. Mr R. P. Gibb would perhaps be appointed later. Miss Dempsey was relieving for one month only.—Received.—A vote of appreciation was passed to the staff in connection with the proficiency, and matriculation results, particularly the latter, in which five out of six passed. It was decided to introduce athletic chamnionfihip prizes for both Iwys and girls in the primary and secondary departments, points to be nwarded for cricket, lawn tennis, football, field sports, etc.—-Accounts amountincr to £5 Is 4d were passed for payment. The picnic had shown a debit •• balance' of Is 3d.. Messrs V. H. Bargh arid J. A. Jull were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. , ' DUNBACK YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB. ! A meeting of the Dunback Young Farmers' Club was held it) the Coronation Hall, Dunback. last night, with Mr D. Moore in the chair, assisted by the president (Mr E. J. Kelly). There was a small attendance. Mr N. M. Wright (president of the Palmerston Young Farmers' Club) was also present. The lee- , turer for the evening was Mr C. R. Smith, who spoke on " Turnip Growing." pointing j out the value of keeping the grubber going after the crop had been thinned so as to ■ kill .all weeds that were springing up. The monthly sitting of the Palmerston Magistrate's Court was held to-day before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. Judgment was given for the plaintiff by default in the following cases:—Patrick F. Howden v. George Carian, claim for £5 ss, with costs (20s); Alfred Curtis v. John Matthews, claim for £3, with costs (£1 7s 6d). POLICE COURT. A sitting of the Palmerston -Police Court was also held to-day before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M. , ■ . ■ A youth was charged with 1 the theft ot a tarpaulin, the property of the New Zealand Railways, and valued at £4, about August, 1933. from the Bushey railway station. Mr "E. L. A. Rolfe appeared for the accused, whose name was suppressed. The accused pleaded guilty, and was convicted and fined 20s, and ordered-to make restitution to the New Zealand Railways to the extent of the value of the tarpaulin, in default seven days' imprisonment.
