OAMARU BOATING CLUB'S REGATTA

There was a Rood attendance at a general meeting of the Oamaru Boating Club, held to make arrangements for the rowing carnival and regatta td be held On the Oamaru Harbour on Saturday, March 17. It was reported that sis boats and about 20 men from at least three Dunedin clubs would be competing,.and good racing was expected. The following programme of rates was drawn up:—Fishermen's Dinghy Race; Maiden Double Sculls, Youths' Double Sculls, Junior Double Sculls, Maiden Fours, Launch Race, Junior Pairs, Youth Pairs, Maiden Pairs, and Senior Pairs. A greasy pole and diving board would be available, and also boats for hire. Launch owners had offered to assist in any way. It was decided to hold combined clubs' fours and speed boat races, in the evening. : INTERPROVINCIAL ATHLETIC CONTEST The interr-rovincial athletic contest to be held at the Show Grounds on Saturday afternoon will undoubtedly provide # all the thrills of a New Zealand championship meeting. There will be assembled at-, this meeting the greatest aggregation of athletic talent ever brought together anywhere in New Zealand apart from the national meeting. Never before has there been such an era of record breaking, and with these champions at the zenith of their form, and with eyes on the Empire Games, some epic struggles should be witnessed this week. The Test Mile should be one of the most historic miles ever run in New Zealand, with Lachie M'Lachlan, C. H. Matthews, Ivor Craig, and H. Eaton. Matthews won the Canterbury Mile easily in 4min 24sec, and was expected to annex the New Zealand title, However: he was beaten by L. C. M'Lachlan in 4min 22 2-ssec. Since then Craig has beaten both M'Lachlan and the Australian, Barwick, in fast time. It is

thought in some quarters that Matthews is capable of better times than these, and others incline. to the opinion that Craig is improving so rapidly as to eclipse all previous efforts; but M'Lachlan is always dangerous, and likely at any time to beat his previous best. The track is fast and the race may be, run round about 4min 21sec or 22aec. Since W. Pullar beat A. T. Anderson at Wellington, the latter has again . lowered the New Zealand record for the 440 Yards Hurdles. Both have been nominated for the Empire Games, and next Saturday should produce a great struggle. A. A. .Cameron will be seen in the Broad Jump, Discus, and Shot, and probably the High Jump. The public will be treated to an excellent display of javelin throwing by Val. New.aU. Phil. Ward (Otago), and H. M. Dawson (Canterbury). The local boys, Brown and Yorston, should give a good account of themselves in this event. The Pole Vault is always an attraction, and the field includes R. 0. Johnson (Otago), H. W. Malvey (Canterbury), and W. Burridge. In the ladies' events Miss Grant, Otago champion, will be opposed by Miss Oliphant (Timaru), who recently had a double win at Waimate, Misses Dick and Rout (Dunedin). The Ladies' High Jump has drawn a large field, and Miss B. Forbes will. endeavour to break her own record for this event. The gathering will commence with a grand parade of athletes in costume at 2.15 p.m., led by the Otago Mounted Rifles Band. This will be an imposing spectacle, and well worth seeing in itself.

Application for the suppression of the accused's name was refused.

Lawrence Edwin Scoon applied for the removal of the endorsement of his driver's license. Mr J. F. The defendant was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on the payment of £5 by March 13, £5 by March 31, and £s"by April 14. , Mr Bundle gave .his reserved decision in the proceedings brought by the health inspector (Mr A.'G. Fischer) against William Gibson for extending a drain without a drain-layer's license. The magistrate briefly reviewed the defence, stating that under seven by-lawg local authorities saw fit to register without further examination a plumber as a rlrainlayer, and it was claimed that the Oamaru by-law was unreasonable. When a by-law was so attacked .the court must be satisfied that it was obviously unreasonable. He held that it was not obviously unreasonable. The fee charged, however, did seem to be too high, not for first registration, but

for the annual charge. Such fees should not be looked on as revenue-producing, and he asked the inspector to draw the attention of the Oamaru Borough Council that the annual registration fee was unreasonably high. He found that a technical breach had been committed and the proceedings would serve as a warning, The defendant was convicted, but no penalty was imposed.
