TO THE EGLINTON VALLEY

Dear ' “ PHlLiiO*,’'—-I wonder if . jttjil would be interested-, to hear of; our trip to the- - Eglinton ‘Valley, The passenger* Who left Dunedin, in the luxurious No. 8 bus on Monday week will, I aid .sure; always remember the delightful four days, in which we travelled over 500 miles, in the’greatest comfort) and saw such wt® - derful, scenery, The Dunedin Tramways Board is to be congratulated on the way in Which the trip is conducted and on having a man like Mr Freeman in charge. We were provided with the morning paper on leaving town, with morning and afternoon teas by the wayside, with ice creams, etc.—delightful little- extras which helped to shorten the journey to such an extent that we arrived at our destination perfectly fresh and untired. Proceeding by way of Gore, where we lunched, we reached Te Anau .at a-quarter to 5 on Monday afternoon, and the next day travelled up the Eglinton Valley in the bu« to the head of Lake Gunn, after making several stops by the way, including a picnic lunch at Cascade Creek. We were charmed with the beauty of the beech forests, Lakes Gunn and Fergus, the mountain ranges, the small waterfalls, etc,, and we returned to the hotel at Te Anau for dinner feeling that we had spent a perfect day. On Wednesday morning we had a launch trip up the south arm of Lake Te Anau, which we were told would give us some idea of the scenery in Milford Sound. , It was a-perfect morning, and we enjoyed the quiet restfulness of the’cruise. Back to the hotel for lunch, and then in the afternoon a bus drive to Lake Manappuri, viewing en route the famous Horseshoe Bend of the Waiau River. We had often heard of the beauty of Manapouri, and were not disappointed. We found it hard to tear ourselves away from the wonderful view of the lake to be seen from the accommodation house, but we bad to be back in, time for d inner. Thursday mor niug found us up bright and early, ready for our return journey, which was. to be by a different route, via Waikaka VnileyV Kelso, Heriot, Rap’s Junction, where we found a wonderful afternoon tea waiting for us—our last meal together—then down by Beaumont, Lawrence, Milton, and so home. Altogether it was a niost delightful and inexpensive holiday, with pleasant and friendly travelling companions. Uo try to go, “ Phillida.” I am sure you would enjoy the trip. You, can book your seat at the tramway office, where they will be pleased to supply you with all the information required.—l am. etc., One of the Passengers.
