CRICKET

SENIOR COMPETITION CONTINUED , FINE SCORE BY UTTLEY KAIKORAI'S EASY WIN A further series of senior cricket matches was concluded on Saturday, but conditions were hardly as favourable as might have been desired, as light showers that fell during the afternoon deadened the wickets considerably, and held up play from time to time. ' High School Old Boys secured a win on the first innings over Grange, ana two-point wins were also obtained by Kaikorai, which defeated Christian Brothers Old Boys by 160 runs, and by Albion and Dunedin. The outstanding performance of the day was that of Uttley, who, playing for University against Albion, just missed his .century by nine runs. Groves (51), Dunning (57), and Rogerson (48) also batted well. The University bowler Cameron came out with the excellent figures of five for 69. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. GRANGER

The match between High School Old Boys was concluded on the Ground, and resulted in a win on the first innings for Old Boys. At.the close of the first day's play Old Boys had 93 on for the loss of a wicket, Saxton (19) and Clark (10) being the not-out men. Saxton had added only two to his overnight score when he got his leg in of one, from Chettleburgh, and Groves joined ClarkGroves hit out in great style, and had 40 to his credit after 16 minutes' batting, but Clark was more patient, although he laid the wood on to anything loose. The partnership yieldedsß3, and the tdtal score had reached 177 before Ledgerwood beat Groves all the way with a straight one. With the advent of Smith, Clark went for the bowling, but with his score at 43 he was smartly taken at square leg by Boyd off Ledgerwood. Elmes got Giles Ibw before he had scored, and Dickinson and Smith were partnered. Smith was unenterprising, but Dickinson, after opening quietly, played lively cricket until, in attempting a big hit off Ledgerwood, he was clean bowled, with 28 ,to his credit, his score comprising five_ 4s, a 6, and two singles. Smith pulled. Ledgerwood for 3 and brought the; score to Grange's total, Leader snicking .the, same bowler for the winning single. Immediately afterwards the left-hander was run out and was .replaced by Payne. # Hardly had the latter come in than Smith, who had - livened up considerably, pulled Ledgerwood to leg and was out tq'a beautiful high one-handed 7 catch by'Knight. Watt contributed a bright 23, and Old Bovs' innings closed for 293: , , , . .Grange went in again and had lost three wickets for'44 runs at 5.45. when an appeal against the light was upheld. DUNEDIN v. CARISBROOK

..The game between Dunedin and Carisbrook was resumed at Carisbrbofe bn. Saturday. In their first innings Dunedin -had made 213, and Carisbrbok had scored 36 for no wickets (D. Cameron 4, Cox 22). The former did not stay Jong, but Cox carried his score to 43 before be was out lbw to Douglas. The wicket was easy, and the bowling of Dunedin could not be said to be very dangerous, but Nimmo, /Moloney, and- MTVlullan were quickly sent back to the pavilion, and five wickets were down for 85. ning -and H. Cameron' became associated, the former especially batting freely. Dunning got some very fine shots through the slips and on the leg side, and also drove 1 with strength. H. Cameron also played some nice strokes, but with the score at 133 he was bowled by Cavanagh., six .wickets then being down., Dunning, was batting so well, however, that victory was within the grasp of Carisbrook. When be was t smartly taken behind the wickets ,by. White—at 159—it was the beginning of the end. Cavanagh, who! only came on towards the .finish, secured three wickets for 12. The catch which dismissed Smith was a smart piece of work. ,t Smith drove one of Cavanagh's deliveries hard back, Cavanagh moving quickly ~ across the wicket .to reach, out and take a onehandedrjatch; Betting's catch of. Ditchfield is also worthy, of mention. . Sotting took one of Nimmo'd-fast deliveries behind ifte, wicket to the cry of "How's that?" The ball bounced : out of the wicket-keeper's hands, however, but he dived for. it and grabbed it, inches off the ground, and Ditchfield was out, caught. ' -- '■"'';. :'.. K "''..'■'. ".'• - Disaster befell Dunedin when they went to the wickets for the second time, and four wickets were quickly down for 22,' [Carisbrook had been hoping to'go through the side for a small score and had put their opponents' in again, but at .half-past 5 the players were forced to leave the ground through a heavy shower (they had, on a. previous occasion—'shortly after half-past 3 —had to leave the ground for a similar reason), and after waiting some time the umpires realised that as the rain continued all they could do was to draw the stumps for the afternoon.
