EXPORT OF PIGS

EFFICIENT ORGANISATION , - SETUP The movement to initiate the export of porkers and baconers to Great Britain was carried a 6tage further on Saturday when a meeting of representatives from all; over Otago decided to commence the collection and tolling of pigs this week. Mr N. Hastings (Morrinsville), who has recently completed a tour in Southland, occupied the chair, and reported that Southland province had definitely started. He then called on district representatives to outline the prospects in each area. ~ ■ ' Mr T. Pearson (Milton) said tliat producers in his district were favourable to the proposal. They realised that the only way to get London parity i or pigs was to export the surplus. L6> prices had been the rule and the only way to keep prices at a payable point- was to export. r Mr W. Blackie (Mosgiel) said that on approaching' farmers on the Taieri he had not had a refusal. Everyone he had approached had signed up. . Mr Dyer (Mosgiel) endorsed the remarks di Mr Blackie in regard to the Taieri district. . Mr H. Holgate (Stirling) reported that in his area there were many pigs. The low prices for pigs had not been encouraging for dairy farmers, but they, would get good support from the few who were handling breeding pigs. ( Mr W. Hastie (Pine Hill) was strongly of the opinion that every pig breeder and fatteher should throw his weight into the movement. One had only to go in for and fattening on a large scale to know the difficulties _ of the past. The. possibility of exporting pigs was a great blessing to fatteners. Mr C. M'Callum (Flag Swamp) said 'that the Waikouaiti and Palmerston district committee had experienced considerable success, and a fair number of pigs were now ready to be sent away. Mr F. Waite reported that the Oamaru district was now. being organised and considerable support would be forthcoming from that area. . _ ' Mr C. M'Callum then moved—" That this representative meeting invito the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association to operate in the district." This was seconded by Mr F. Waite and carried. . Mr Hastings said that the Marketing Association did not care to operate in any district unless at least 5000 pigs were forthcoming, but now that at least half of the number of pigs raised annually in the province was promised to *he association he had much pleasure in.announcing that the handling of pigs for export would be commenced this week. An executive committee consisting of Messrs P. Waite (chairman), C. M'Callnnli „ Dyer, W. Hastie and W. E. M'Lean (secretary) was set up to arrange all details with the district committees. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to the Farmers* Union and the dairy-companies for arranging the organising, and to Mr N. Hastings for the immense amount of work he had put into the movement.
