OBITUARY
MADAME PADEREWSKI (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) BERNE, January 19. (Received Jan. 17, at 8 p.m.) The death is announced of Madame Paderewski, wife of the world-famous pianist. CAPTAIN E. R. NICHOLAS The death occurred at Christchurch on Tuesday of Captain Evan Robert Nicholas a master mariner well-known throughout New Zealand. He was in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company for many years, and came ashore some time ago, having been appointed stevedore for Messrs John Mill and Co. Captain Nicholas took a keen interest in boating, and was associated with the North-East Harbour Club, being appointed commodore last year. Ho was a familiar figure at every regatta before being laid aside with a serious illness some months ago. Captain Nicholas was a resident of Macandrew Bay. • , Reference to the death of Captain Nicholas was made by Mr A. W. Hazelwood (president) at a meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association last night. Mr Hazelwood said that boating men deeply regretted the passing of Captain Nicholas, who was widely respected and who had been closely associated with boating in Otago Harbour. A resolution of sympathy was carried, the secretary being instructed to forward suitable letters to the relatives and to the North-East Harbour Boating Club. /
