THE MISSING LINK
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When I read the article in your issue of January 6 on the above subject I thought that the Rev. Raymond Simpson was merely elaborating the Bilstubs’ joke. I am pleased to see your correspondent “ Profanum Vulgus,” even so late as in yesterday’s issue, helping it along. In the winter of 1927 the University ot Otago gave the following public lectures which were well attended by the general public:—July 7—Dr Benson: “Evolution of the Woidd as an Abode of Life. ’ j„ly 21—Dr Betiham: ‘‘Evolution of Animals; Evidence for Evolution.” July 28 —Dr Benhnui: “Evolution of Man.” August 21 —Dr Malcolm: “Evolution of Function.” August 11 —Dr Jack: “Evolution in the Physical World.” August 18t— Dr Dunlop; “Religion and Evolution.” August 25 —Archdeacon Whitehead: “Evolution and Philosophy.” Numberless religious and preachers avail themselves of this education to enable their sons and daughters to become medical and other scientists. Even religion must submit to the universal law. Is the alleged missing link then of much importance? As I understand the facts of evolution they depend upon no missing link. Although I have not had the benefit of a university training, I have been an observer of the facts of life for many years now, with the result that I call myself an evolutionist. There are more missing links between the dust from which Adam was made, and the finished product than I have been able to forge into a continuous chain. Maybe, if the Rev. Raymond Simpson is serious and he submitted one of Adam’s descend, ants to X-ray examination he would discover the missing link where the missing rib was. —I am, etc.. Evolutionist,
