A NEW ZEALAND ARTIST
— EXPERIENCE IN FRANCE * (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 17. Mr Sydney L. Thompson, u New Zealand artist, accompanied by his wife and two daughters, arrived by the Wanganella to-day. Mr Thompson is proceeding to Christchurch, where he and his family will make their home. In an interview, Mr Thompson said that. Paris was the world’s market for paintings. France was one of the most beautiful countries in the world for the painter. He had been accustomed to paint fishing scenes in Britany during the summer and landscapes and portraits on the Riviera during the winter. Asked whether ultra-modern art was on the wane in France, Mr Thompson replied: “It is and it isn’t.” It appeared to be on the wane at the larger exhibitions, but there were still plenty of exhibitions of ultra-modern art.
