E. Macmillan) when replying to a deputation to-day representing Australian financial interests which are prepared to invest in gold mining in New Zealand, and which sought the removal of this duty. The deputation was a private one. . Although Mr Macmillan promised to place the representations before Cabinet, it is understood that he informed the deputation that the high exchange was put on for the benefit of that class in the community which had suffered by the drop in the world’s prices of commodities, and that gold, so far from having dropped, had appreciated in value.
