BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS
(From Ouh Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, November 17. HALLOWE’EN CONCERT. The Britannia Theatre was packed to the doors last night on the occasion of the annual Hallowe’en concert in aid of the funds of the Balclutha Pipe Band. The Dunedin Burns Club concert party was responsible for the programme, which was one of conspicuous merit, full of Scottish pathos and humour. Those contributing were Mrs D. Carty, Miss M'Kay, Miss Eagar (vocalists), Miss Lorna Budge (dancer), and Messrs George Currie, A. Lungley, W. H. MacKenzie, W. Le Gal, E. Heaney, and J. Paterson, The last-named was not in good voice, and substituted humorous recitations for songs. A feature that was hailed with enthusiasm by a large section of the audience was the ceremony of the haggis, which was piped in to the stage by Piper E. Gold* while Mr George Currie gave the celebrated “Address to the Haggis ” of Robert Burns. After the concert the performers were the guests of the Pipe Band at supper in Gold’s Tea Rooms. This was quite a convivial affair, and wag much enjoyed by all present, OWAKA COURT. At Owaka yesterday, before Mr Thomas Barr, J.P., and Mr Adam Paterson, J.P., Francis Arthur Blower, of Purekireki, was charged on the information of the police with assaulting Kenneth William Kirkland at Purekireki on August 27. Constable Dark prosecuted, and Mr G. J. Kelly appeared for the defendant. After hearing the evidence of the complainant and another witness, Air Kelly asked the Bench to dismiss the case under Section 92 of the Justices of the Peace Act as being trivial. 'The Bench accordingly dismissed the case without culling on the defendant to give evidence.
