Mr A. H. Allen was a passenger by yesterday morning's express for Wellington. Mr Jameg Begg left Dunedin for Wellington -by the express yesterday morning. The three Otago representatives in the South Island Rugby team —W. T. Dunne,, J. Hore, and H. Smith, left by yesterday morning’s express for Wellington. The members of the Tariff Commission travelled to Christchurch yesterday morning. ... By a notice in the Gazette last night Mr Walter W. Orebough is authorised to act as vice-consul for the United States of America in Wellington. Mr R. A. Yock, director of Messrs J. Yock and Co., Ltd., of Auckland, has left England on his return to New Zealand, and is expected to arrive at the end of this month. The Public Service Commissioner has announced the appointment of Mr William Eric Arnold, at present deputy-com-missioner and secretary, to succeed Mr A. E. Allison as commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Office. Mr J. W. Macdonald, chief clerk, will succeed Mr Arnold as deputy-commissioner and secretary. „ _ , A Press Association message from Wellington states that the board of directors of the United Press Association has promoted Mr T. M. Hinkley,_ a member of the association's staff and its parliamentary reporter, to the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr T. Lindsay Buick. The staff vacancy will be filled by another appointment early in October. Mr G. W. Reid, of Dunedin, who has been in Wellington attending a meeting of the Railways Board, will arrive in Christchurch this morning. He will be tendered a complimentary dinner in the evening by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and, as president of the society, will deliver an address to members on matters of interest to the profession. Many organisations and activities of the Presbyterian Church were represented at a large public gathering hold in St. John’s Church. Wellington, on Wednesday night, when tho jubilee of the Rev. Dr James Gibb, former minister of First. Church, Dunedin, and St. John’s, Wellington, was commemorated. Dr Gibb was made the subject of a number of complimentary addresses, while letters ot congratulation and praise for _ his long ministerial and beneficent activities were received from all parts of New Zealand.
