YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
MEETING OF DIRECTORS A well-attended meeting of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A. was held yesterday afternoon. Mrs C. M. Begg presided, and there were also present Mesdames J. Malcom, P. L. Ritchie, H. M'Allum, H. D. Skinner, W. J. Porteous, H. K. Wilkinson, C. B. Barrowclough, P. Kerens, C. F. Fowler, F. B. Adams, T. Somerville, R. C. Jones, H. Price and Blackmore and Misses F. J. Ross, M. Black and L. Sullivan. The opening devotional session was lea by Mrs C. F. Fowler. The new members of the board were welcomed, and Miss M. Black, employment secretary, was introduced to the meeting. The election of officers of the association resulted as follows: —President, Mrs C. M. Begg; vice-presidents —Mesdames J. Malcolm and W. J. Porteous; treasurer, Mrs C. B. Barrowclough; minute secretary, Mrs H. K. Wilkinson; National Board members—Mrs C. Fowler and Miss M. Black. In accepting with regret the resignations of Mrs J. C. Begg and Mrs E. E. Nicholson, members spoke very appreciatively of the long term of loyal service given by Mrs Nicholson, and her indefatigable work as a board member, treasurer and president of the association. It was decided to confer on Mrs Nicholson the honour of making her a life member of the association. > . Among correspondence was _ material received from the national president, Dr Sylvia Chapman, in connection with the reopening of the Disarmament Conference. This spoke of the identification of the World Association with the cause of peace, and reminded local boards that they were called upon at this time to declare themselves in favour of disarmament and pledged to do all in their power to influence public opinion and especially the mind of youth in this direction. A committee was set up to arrange how this could be carried out. Recommendations in favour of a general reduction of tariff in the hostel were adopted in order to meet current prices, while certain necessary repairs to the roofs of both buildings were arranged for. . The report of the committee on the Hallowe’en Fair, to be held on October 31 and November 1, stated that stalls had been allotted to various departments, and it was hoped that the takings would total at least £l2O. Arrangements in connection with decorations and publicity were also well in hand.—Received.
