HOME ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION

„ ANNUAL MEETING :■ The annual general meeting of the Otago Home Economics Association was held in the Home Science Building, University, last night. The chair was occupied by Mrs Keith Cameron, president, and there was a crowded attendance of members. Dr Gregory, mib-dean of the home science faculty, was welcomed to the meeting. REPORTS. The annual report was read by Miss Reid, who acted as secretary in the unavoidable absence of Miss Stevenson. The report detailed the work of the association during the year, and to the efforts of officers and others to make that work a success. The balance sheet, showing a credit balance of £193 12s, was read by Mrs Aikman (treasurer). _ Miss Calder moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet. Mrs S. M. Park seconded the motion. She said it was a pleasure to know that so many new branches bad been formed, and that the members were so enthusiastic. She hoped the new members would tnake themselves thoroughly conversant with the constitution of the association so that the objects might be strictly guarded and discussed. . Although the association was in its initial stages, more concerned with the woman in the home, it whs now reaching out into measures of community work. The report showed that the association was doing good work in the community, which was evidenced by the fact that many persons paid for admission at the door when lectures were held. It also spoke well for the interest of members that they had a satisfactory balance sheet. Mrs Park made reference to other branches of work, such as the day nursery. . The'motion was carried. The branch reports were read and received. PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS, v. The president congratulated the branch on an excellent year’s work. Every leader had her own difficulties to cope with, but the loyal co-operation and regular attendance of branch members had helped greatly to lighten the load. The leaders had been a tower of strength round the council table, and for their co-operation then and at all times she thanked them. There were others who had done great work for the' association. Some had been mentioned in the annual report, but she would like to take the opportunity ot voicing her appreciation of their help. The news sheet had added great interest to their branch meetings. A work like that had to be well begun to make it a success, and Mrs NimmoTiad given it that good and true beginning. Hong may she continue her good work.—(Applause). Mrg Leary, in her. bright and interesting manner, had been the mam stay of some of these -newer branches, and much of her enthusiasm had been passed on to the members'. Mrs Evans had faithfully represented the association on the National Council of Women. Mrs Cameron said she spoke-as a member ot the council of the work Mrs Evan s did for that association. She was pne ot its most active members.' To their new life member, Mrs Cooper, for her continued interest and work among some ot the scattered units thanks were also due. Miss Reid, busy as she always was, had been ever ready and willing to give oi her knowledge and her time, and through her interest the association had the help of the extension staff. Of the treasurer, Mrs Aikman, she could only say that no one needed to worry regarding finance. Whatever required attention . would be well done, and the books were in perfect order. To the councillors at large who had been always ready to help when called upon she tendered the thanks of the association. - Last but by no means least, said the president, “ there is our secretary When I say she is 1 our ’ Miss Stevenson, I think that expresses the feeling we all have tor her.—(Applause.) Working with her as I have done, I have learned to appreciate still further her outstanding characteristics of loyalty , and sympatlnc understanding To all these ladies I would like to express my thanks for the work they have done for the association, and the help they have given me as president. —(Applause.) ALTERATION OF RULES. On the motion of Miss Reid, seconded by Mrs Reid, an alteration was made to the rules with regard to branch balances. Mrs Doddg moved a niotion respecting finances which was carried. , OTHER ASSOCIATIONS. The president read a .letter, from, Mrs Strong, written when in Auckland, regarding the formation there of a home economics association, and remarked that it was satisfactory to know there were now associations in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Officers were elected for the' ensuing year as follows:—President, Mrs Keith Cameron; vice-presidents—Mrs Leary, Mrs S. M. Park, Miss Calder; secretary. Miss A. Stevenson; treasurer,- Mrs Aikman; council —Mrs A. C. Cameron, Mis Orr Campbell, Mrs George Cooper, Sister Lilian, and Miss Sullivan. COMPLIMENTARY. On the motion of Mrs Cooper, a. vote of thanks and appreciation from leaders of groups was passed to Miss Stevenson (secretary) for her kind assistance. A posy of spring flowers was ■•presented by Mrs G. M’Gregor to the president amid hearty applause. Mrs Cameron replied in fitting terms. It was decided to send greetings to Mrs Strong, patroness, and also to forward to her an account of the, meeting. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Strong for the use of the meeting room and to the press for reports of lectures. A posy of flowers was handed by Mrs Orr Campbell'to Miss Joachim as a token of appreciation of her interest, in the association. MISS JOACHIM’S LECTURE. Miss Joachim gave an interesting lecture on her travels in Europe and elsewhere, in which she touched in a very interesting way on .the customs and. costumes of the people in the lands she visited. , A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Joachim for her address.
