RETURNED SOLDIERS
ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEETING A meeting of flic Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association Executive was hold last night. The president (Mr A. J. Gordon) occupied the chair. The secretary reported lh.it the membership of (he association to date was 1003. lie also reported that the Christchurch Association now had a membership of 14.71. Sixteen new members were nominated and one honorary member was admitted. One inward transfer was granted. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs A. J. Gordon, P. S, Anderson, A. S. Falconer, and the secretary was appointed to confer with representatives of the Imperial Ex-servicemen’s Association, and also the civic authorities, if necessary, in regard to the conducting of Armistice Day services. The Unemployment Committee reported that the new group which had been formed at Chisholm Park was working well, and that single men were receiving one day’s work during the stand-down week. Allocations amounting to £ll2 had been made to country districts.. The committee also reported that arrangements were being
made to provide parcels for married exservicemen at Christmas time. —The report was received. Mr J. A. Skinner and Dir G. IT. Fcrens, in reporting on the membership campaign meetings held recently at Anderson’s Bay and St. Kilda, said that these had been very successful. The action of the executive in arranging these meetings had been fully justified.—Mr A. M’Hutchou said that a meeting had been held at NorthEast Harbour recently and the nucleus of a branch association embracing Macandrew Bay, Broad Bay, and Portobello had been formed. —The report was received. A circular from headquarters, Wellington, stated that as the result of the representations made by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association to the Acting Prime Minister for exemption from the sales tax for poppies manufactured in New Zealand by disabled soldiers, it had been decided to place an amount on the Estimates of the Customs Department to provide for the sales tax chargeable on poppies.—This had been noted with satisfaction at headquarters.—Pleasure at receiving this consideration was expressed by members. . ~ . It was announced that the associations next “Free mid Easy” night would be held September 23, and that reunion gatherings would ho held at Green Island on September 10, Port Chalmers on September 30, and Lawrence on October 7.
