QUEST OF DISARMAMENT
THE BRITISH CONVENTION DISCUSSIONS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, September 5. France and Britain will hold preliminary disarmament consultations in Paris on September 18 in an endeavour to reach an agreement on the British draft convention, which will again be discussed by the full conference at Geneva on October 16. It Is reported from Paris that the Austrian situation, and the restoration of the Balkan and Central Europe boundaries will ''also be discussed. BRITISH CABINET DISCUSSION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 5. Cabinet to-day sat for four hours. There was practically a full attendance. It is understood that foreign affairs and disarmament were the principal subjects under examination. The Prime Minister, who presided, afterwards left for his visit to the King and Queen at Balmoral. It is expected that Captain Anthony Eden (Foreign Under-secretary) will go to Paris later this month for conversations with the French Government on the various points which arose at the Disarmament Conference during the first reading of the British draft convention. Mr Norman Davis (the United States delegate to the conference) will be in London to-morrow and will see Sir John Simon at the Foreign Office. PRANCE’S BEDROCK POLICY. LONDON, September 6. (Received Sept. 7, at 1 a.m.) The Chronicle’s Paris correspondent says rigid inspection and control of armaments is now the bedrock French policy for the Disarmament Conference. So seriously is the rearming of Germany regarded in France that if Germany refuses to accept such control France will undoubtedly take steps to bring matters to a head, with or without the support of other Powers.
