THE CROMWELL FLAT
DEVELOPMENT COMPANY'S LAND NEGOTIATIONS WITH GOVERNMENT It Is reported that negotiations are in progress between the Mines Department and the Cromwell Development Company, Ltd., for the purchase by the Government of the land which the company holds on the Cromwell Flat. This is a course' which has for some time been advocated as a means of reaching a settlement of the complex legal difficulties that have arisen with respect to the granting of prospecting licenses over areas on the Development Company's lands. It has been suggested that the Government, having acquired the land, might recover its expenditure by selling the areas involved to the present applicants for mining purposes. When asked to comment on the report the company's solicitor (Mr J. P. Ward) declined to make any statement beyond the fact that the chairman of directors of the company (Mr P. R. Sargood) was at present out of town. He, therefore, was not in a position to make any comment. When the report concerning the negotiations was referred to the Minister of Mines (Mr C. E. Macmillan) in Wellington last night he did not confirm it.
