INCIDENT AT PEKING
ATTACK ON AMERICAN LADY FOREIGNERS INDIGNANT. PEKING, September 5. (Received Sept. 6, at 0.15 a.m.) Foreigners are highly indignant at an attack by Japanese soldiers upon Miss Arguello, private secretary to the American Minister. Miss Arguello was riding round a glacis, surrounding the Legation quarter, when the Japanese, having decided, without warning,, not to allow their section to be used for horseback riding, stopped her, at the same time handing her an unsigned note forbidding trespass. Miss Arguello continued to ride, and returned surrounded by soldiers with fixed bayonets. One threw a large stone at the pony, while others struck her arm, snatched her riding cane and seized the bridle, attempting to pull her off the pony. She was saved from further violence by the intervention of the French commandant.
