SATURDAY’S MATCHES MEN’S COMPETITION High School Old Boys defeated University II by 5 goals to 2 on Saturday and Albany beat Balclutha by 7 to .3. The grounds were in fairly good order but a cold breeze made conditions unpleasant.

ALBANY v. BALCLUTHA Albany and Balclutha met on Oval No. 1. From the initial bully Balclutha attacked and kept the Reds hemmed in their twenty-five, until, with a good shot, the inside right opened the score. Balclutha 1, Albany nil. Albany took a turn at attack, and carried play to the Whites’ circle, but Baxter cleared and up-and-down play followed. Thomson and Ainger combined nicely and the latter found a chance to equalise. Albany 1, Balclutha 1. The Reds came again, but Brebner cleared, and Wilson went away only to be beaten by Ward. Rennick received and passed to Dey. Play then went quickly down field, and returned to Rennick, who beat the goalie with a slow shot. Albany 2, Balclutha 1, The game was fairly even at this stage, and both teams attacked in tuiji. Wilson and Baxter started passing, a corner resulting. Baxter had a shot, but Kilpatrick saved, and sent the ball on to Simpson. Play quickly transferred to the Balclutha circle for Densem to score a lucky goal. Albany 3, Balclutha 1. Balclutha attacked strongly. With the Reds’ defence out \of position, Wilson beat Twose with a hot shot. Albany 3, Balclutha 2. On resumption of play in the second spell, Albany attacked strongly, and took play to the Whites’ circle where Densem scored. Albany 4, Balclutha 2. /Albany was playing well, and Rennick, Densem, and Dey were seen in a nice passing rush, ■which ended in Densem beating the goalie to score his third goal. Albany 5, Balclutha 2. From the bully Baxter received and passed on to Wilson. This player, after running /down-field, passed £ut to the left wing, who went i,n to Peat Twose with a fast shot. Albany '5, Balclutha 3. The game at this stage was fast and interesting, neither side gaining much advantage. Then Whitburn sent 6n to Curtis, who in turn sent to Rennick. After beating three opponents this player added to his side’s score. Albany 6, Balclutha 3. The Albany forwards all handled the ball for Dey to finish the movement with . a good shot. Albany 7, Balclutha 3. Balclutha then came away, blit Ward was equal to the occasion, and cleared to Ainger, but Baxter came in to gain possession and start passing. The ball, however, went out. From the throwin Wilson received, but could not finish off the movement, and Balclutha was attacking strongly when the final whistle went, with the score;—

OLD BOYS A v. UNIVERSITY B

Old Boys met University B on Oval No. 3. From the initial bully University attacked and Gurr cleared. Up and down play followed till Martin gained possession, a 25 resulting. In the face of a University attack led by Boyd, D. Gurr Seared well to Martin, who, beating several opponents, passed to Harris, who scored. School again attacked, but were penalised for offside play. From a good rush by the School forwards L. Gurr sent in a shot which was cleared by Cable. University returned to the attack, and School was forced to concede a corner, which was cleared by L. Gurr. A good rush led by Guy was cleared by Innes. Several rushes by the University forwards were cleared by D. Gurr. School was attacking vigorously, and M'Clatchy netted -with a good shot. Several rushes by School resulted in D. Hanning scoring an easy goal. Half time was then called. '

From the bully School attacked, but Wadham cleared well. From a good clearance by Botting, Grey gained possession, centreing- well for W. Hanning to score with a- great shot. University attacked again, but Penny cleared. Each side attacked strongly, Orton and Wadham clearing well in the face of several -rushes by School, School came again, and i Hotting found > the ” ; net. University gained possession from the bully, and Johnson scored with an easy shot. Keeping up the' pressure, University was rewarded when Reid scored, from a difficult angle. SECOND GRADE. University C 4, Caversham 1. University D 2, Technical 0.8. 1. LADIES’ MATCHES OTAGO v. UNIVERSITY. Playing on Logan Park, Otago and University provided a thrilling exhibition of the game. Right, from the start both sides took turns on attack, and play was verv fast. They were all playing good hockey, hitting hard with good judgment, placing nicely, and tackling well. Defence was good, and many forward attacks broke down. From a fine University rally R. Hunt took the ball away from an opposing half, and, racing down the field, scored a good gobl. Otago retaliated and set up a strong attack: From a scramble in the circle an Otago forward scored, and the scores were level. In the second spell both sides made strenuous efforts, but good defensive work kept the forwards out. Both sides attacked in turn, but there was no further score, and the game ended: > Otago .. .. .. .. .. l.goal. University 1 goal. Messrs R. Coats and D. Miller were the referees. MOMONA v. DUNEDIN. Momona took up the attack at the commencement of the game against Dunedin, but found the Dunedin defence good and the Red half line tackling well. Dunedin’s forward work lacked sting, but the game was quite interesting and not devoid of some really good movements. Momona led at half time. In the second spell Dunedin showed improved form, and had the Momona defence sorely tried. It was a really good game, which resulted: Momona 3 goals. Dunedin .. 3 goals. Mr T. Moore was referee. TECHNICAL v. HIGH SCHOOL. Technical played well in Saturday’s game; and decisively defeated High School in a hard and fast game. The School defence found difficulty-in coping with the Technical mode of attack, and the Technical forwards did not miss Chances. This is the only occasion on which Technical has shown best form, and they won a well-earned victory without difficulty. Technical Old Girls .. 5 goals. High School 1 goal. Mr R. Momona 4, University nil. Otago 3, Taieri 1. DOMINION TOURNAMENT. Particulars of entries received for the New Zealand tournament, to be held at Dannevirke this year, are as follow: Southland, Eastern, Ashburton, Canterbury. Otago. Marlborough, Wellington, Auckland. Wanganui, Taranaki, Akitio, Bush, Manawatu, Wairarapa (2), Ruahine (2). Feilding (2) —a total of 19. It is understood that Miss I. Graham (■University inside-right)—perhaps the best scoring forward—is not available for the tour. Nineteen teams have entered for the tournament, which will be commenced on August 23,_ and concluded on August 30. The entries have been divided into three sections.
