(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, August 6. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Eastern District senior flag competition was concluded yesterday. Shag Point is the successful team, having gone through the competition unbeaten. This team defeated Palmerston by 5 points to 3, Waikouaiti defeated Dunbaek by 15 points to 9. and Karitane defaulted to Seacliff in the match to have been played at Karitane. A small crowd watched the game between Waikouaiti and Dunbaek at Waikouaiti. In the first half White and K. Kirkwood scored for Waikouaiti, and Sutherland for Dunbaek, making the half time score Waikouaiti 6, Dunbaek 3. In the second spell R. Kirkwood, Dowic, and H. Kirkwood added tries to Waikouaiti s total, and Sutherland and M'Lauchlin to Dunlaack’s. The game ended: Waikouaiti 15, Dunbaek 9, Mr J. B. Burton was the referee. A large and interested crowd of spectators watched the banner final between Palmerston and Shag Point here yesterday. Only two points separated the teams, and a' win for Palmerston would have necessitated a play-off. Shortly after the start Aitcheson snapped up and went over, J. Barber converting. Shag Point 5, Palmerston nil. Half time was called with no further score. In the second spell Parkhill kicked a penalty. Shag Point 5, Palmerston 3. The game ended without further score. Peddie and Nicoll were the best of the losing backs, and Barber of the winners. Parkhill and O’Connell were prominent in the home pack, and Penny in the visiting one. Mr L. E. Palmerston Juniors won a one-sided game against Merton at Palmerston by 29 points to nil. Mr C. M. Olsen was the referee. The Eastern District South End Schoolboys (south of Palmerston) played the North End at Waikouaiti yesterday morning as a trial game for the match against Otago primary schoolboys at Palmerston nest Saturday. The North End won comfortably by 20 point to nil. FOOTBALL INJURIES. The only injuries yesterday were to Palmerston players in the game against Shag Point. Early in the game F. Simpson had to retire with an injured knee, W. Quinn replacing him. C. C. Whittleston went off with a hurt collarbone, L. M‘Gregor taking his place. SUB-UNION MEETING. Mr R. MTntosh presided over the fortnightly meeting of the executive of The Eastern District Rugby Football Subunion last night. The Karitane Club wrote stating that Mr M. C. Wilkinson had resigned from the club, and that Mr D. Harper had been appointed in his stead. The resignation was accepted with regret. St. Kevin’s College (Oamaru) wrote stating that September 9 was the most suitable date for the annual fixture with Eastern District Juniors, and asked that the game be played at the college. The date was confirmed and the request agreed to. ... The referee of the Waitati-Waikouaiti Junior game (Mr I. Willoughby) wrote stating that he had had to cautimy a player (J. Duncan) for charging in line outs. It was decided to request both player and referee to appear before the next meeting. . It was resolved to write to the Taien Plains Sub-union inquiring if its team could travel to Palmerston and play Eastern District Juniors on August 26. It was decided to endeavour to procure a Dunedin referee for the Waitati-Mer-ton game at Waitati next Saturday. Mr 11. Fry was appointed for the PalmerstonWaikouaiti game at Waikouaiti, and Mr C. M. Olsen for the Otago-Eastern District primary schoolboys’ match at Palmerston. Mr R. MTntosh was appointed manager of the. Eastern District team for the match against Otago on August 19, at Palmerston. It was decided to submit the names of Messrs C. M. Olsen, I. 'Willoughby, and M. C. Wilkinson to the North Otago Union for the Junior game against that union at Palmerston on August 26. As a recommendation to the donors of the Eastern District Challenge Shield it was decided to request that a knockout competition be substituted for the present system whereby the winner and runner-up for the banner meet.
