GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE

RALLY AT GREEN ISLAND The Otago Battalion of the Girls’ Life Brigade, which consists of companies from South Dunedin, Cavorsham, Concord and Green Island, held its annual rally at Green Island on Saturday. Although the brigade is practically in its infancy in Otago the present strength of the battalion and the enthusiasm shown by the girls and their officers augur well for the future. Under the guidance of the church the Girls’ Life Brigade, which is a sister movement of the Life Boys, combines spiritual teaching with physical training. The parade was inspected by Mrs Dunn, president of the Otago Battalion Council, Commissioner Carter of the Life Boys, and Commandant Gilliland, captain of the Concord Brigade. Games were then played in the Green Island Presbyterian Church Hall. After tea, which was provided by the committee, the choir and Scripture reading contests were held. Mr 0. Roy Spackman, who judged the choir contest, was favourably impressed with the standard of work and commented on the improvement on the previous year's performance. The contest had been of groat interest and there was very little difference between the first two choirs. On account of the excellent team work he had placed Green Island first. The result was as follows; —Green Island (79) 1, Cavorsham (78) 2. Concord (OS) 3, South Dunedin (00) 4. The Scripture reading was judged by Mr G. W. Johnstone, who embodied m his remarks valuable information on Scripture reading for their future guidance.. The junior event was won by Nancy Gcddes (Green Island) with 80 points. South Dunedin was second with 78 points, Concord third with 77 points, and Cavcrsham fourth with 70 points. In the senior rending Mr Johnstone was unable to separate the two leading competitors and awarded Lorna Adam (Green Island) and Joy Gillies (Cavcrsham) first equal with 85 points. Mrs Dunn, in presenting the banner for the choir contest, congratulated Captain M. Adam and Lorna Adam, leader of the Green Island Choir, on their success. Trophies were also presented to the winners of the Scripture reading. Mrs Dunn and Commandant Gilliland thanked the judges and helpers for their assistance at the rally.
