COWES REGATTA OPENED

BRILLIANT SUNSHINE PRINCE ARRIVES BY PLANE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 2. (Received August 3, at 5.5 p.m.) The annual four-day regatta of the Royal Yacht Squadron began at Cowes yesterday. The King sailed in the royal yacht Britannia in brilliant sunshine, after a windy morning. The Queen landed at East Cowes in the afternoon. The Prince of Wales flew to Cowes in an amphibian plane and joined their Majesties on board the Victoria and Albert. WIN FOR KING’S YACHT. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 2. (Received August 3, at 5.5 p.m.) The King’s cutter Britannia won her first race of the Cowes regatta week today. The King sailed in the race and was accompanied by the Prince of Wales. Britannia was stoutly challenged by the all-steel yacht Belsheda, which yesterday won the King’s Cup. Belsheda held the lead in the early stages of the 40 miles race. After being twice overhauled by Britannia Belsheda again drew ahead, and although she finished first Britannia had a time allowance and won by 42sec.
