CATTLE FODDER

INTENSIVE CULTIVATION NEW PROCESS DEMONSTRATED (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, August 3. fßeceived August, 3, at 11 p.m.) An Australian Press Association representative saw a demonstration at the National Institute's dairy research station at Shinfild, near Reading, of the new process of intensive cultivation of fodder for fattening cattle. The process was invented by a German, Dr Spangenberg, and an English company has been formed to develop it commercially. It enables numerous crops, particularly maize and oats, to grow to the same extent in 10 days as normally would occupy two or three months. The process consists of sowing seeds in air-tight cabinets from which light is excluded, the seeds being treated with considerable quantities of water containing a small proportion of chemical. The method produces such intense growth that the crop can be removed from the cabinets after 10 days, when from 13 to 16 inches high, and used immediately for fattening animals. It is claimed that 36 crops can be grown annually and that the vitamin content is greater than in natural crops.
