NAZIS CROSS FRONTIER

SAAR INHABITANTS SEIZED A PROTEST FROM FRANCE. PARIS, August 2. The French Ambassador at Berlin has protested against Nazis entering the Saar and seizing three inhabitants. The Saar Governing- Commission has protested to the German Government against the Nazis’ raid. It is alleged that armed men wearing Nazi uniforms invaded a house across the frontier, seized three men, bound them, and took them to Germany in a motor car.

According to paragraph 49 of the Treaty of Versailles the Saar Basin was placed under the control of the League of Nations. In 1935 the population shall decide by plebiscite wha* - nationality they desire. Meanwhile the district is governed by a commission of five nominated by the League, of whom one is French, one resident of the Saar, and three others. There is also a Landcsrat of 30 members, which co-operates with the Government in an advisory capacity.
